"Sixteen-year-old Avene was sentenced to prison at thirteen for a crime she didn't commit. Now she has a chance to win her freedom back – if she enters the Headhunters Race. Second prize isn't so bad either, an upgrade to the Leisure Prison if you make it to the finish line. To win either prize, Avene and the other prisoners must navigate one hundred and fifty miles of dense forest, desert, and worst of all, cannibal territory.

With a mechanical collar timed to strangle the prisoners if they're not back in nine days, Avene allies herself with seventeen-year-old McCoy, another prisoner that insists on helping her at every turn and a boy she's trying hard not to fall for. Together they battle nature, other prisoners, and the timed death collars to win the coveted prize. But when Avene is tested with one deadly conflict after another, she realizes there is more at stake than winning her freedom – first she has to survive."

INTERVIEW

1.)Are writing anything new?

I'm actually writing a couple of different manuscripts.  One is the sequel to The Headhunters Race and the other is a near future young adult Sci/Fi with a male main character that I'm very excited about.

2.) Who are your favorite authors, and why do you like their works?

I have many, many favorite authors.  C.S. Lewis is coming to mind at this particular moment because of the fantasy world he created and I immersed myself in when I was young. But I love so many authors and their books because of their fabulous characters, and stories, and worlds and how they can pull me in and make me feel like I'm living in the story world too.

3.) What inspires your characters, and how do you create their emotions?

This is a good question because I'm not sure I know myself what inspires the characters.  The story idea usually comes first and then the characters just pop into my head and start talking and I just take it from there and write down what's coming to me.  As far as their emotions, I think about their background and history to try and figure out how they'd react in different situations based on their past experiences.

4.) In the Headhunters Race, what is your favorite part?

I have a lot of favorite parts in the book - one is when McCoy asks Avene if she'll split up the supplies into the three packs for their journey after they were able to confiscate a few from rogue prisoners. I love how Avene takes certain things into consideration when splitting up the items, like how tall McCoy is and the fact that Jake is a growing kid.   :)

5.) What message would you like to leave your readers?

That you can do anything you want - you just have to believe in yourself and then blaze a path toward your goal!

6.) How do you define yourself?

This is another good question and not something I've really thought about and now that you ask me, I'm having a difficult time figuring it out.  What I'm going to say is that I'm not sure a person can really be defined very easily because humans are so complex and ever changing and there are many things that contribute to a person's character at any one time.   :)
